The Italian Diabetes and Exercise Study 2 (IDES-2): a long-term behavioral intervention for adoption and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle

Introduction. Physical activity is an integral part of type 2 diabetes management; many studies have shown the benefits of physical activity in improving metabolic control and cardiovascular risk factors. However, existing guidelines are difficult to apply in clinical practice due to a number of barriers, mainly related to the lack of acceptable, feasible and validated behavioral strategies

Aims. The IDES-2 study has been designed to test the efficacy of a strategy aimed at increasing the level of physical activity and reduce time spent in sedentary conditions in people with type 2 diabetes

Type of study. Randomized controlled parallel groups (1: 1) multicenter clinical trial

Population. 300 patients with type 2 diabetes between 40 and 80 years, with sedentary lifestyles

Centers. 3 Italian diabetes centers

Promoter. Sant’Andrea Hospital, Rome

Funding. Metabolic Fitness Association O.N.L.U.S
